Halong Bay, Vietnam

Hi all,

We have just returned from two beautiful sunny days on Halong Bay. It is an area in Northern Vietnam, where over 3000 limestone islands are clustered in a turquoise water bay. There are hundreds of Vietnamese Junks waiting to take tourists around the bay. Halong Bay means descending dragon.. the legend says that the giant dragon came down from the mountain swinging its tail to create the valleys and mountains and when it jumped in the ocean it created all the islands. It never returned to its heaven but stayed here to protect the Vietnamese.

We heard about legends in the caves and did some kayaking. The highlight had to be Mira, Paul and Kate jumping off the roof of the junk into the ocean... very brave. I jumped from a lower deck. We enjoyed the relative quiet compared to the city.

The drive back was long as an accident added on two hours to our trip. The driver managed to weave in and out and through very, very tight spots to get us home.

The connection is slow this morning so you only get a couple of photos.

Paul and Mira are fighting colds and we are off on the sleeper train to Hue. Ta ta for now.
